"Olbia is a safe city; we shouldn't get the impression that we're in the trenches." Mayor Settimo Nizzi isn't prepared to make it seem like a Wild West, with entire neighborhoods in the grip of crime.

Nizzi does not believe the news stories of recent weeks, most recently involving attacks and violence in an Asian restaurant downtown, to be a cause for concern. Above all , he does not want the idea to get across that it is necessary to arm oneself or start voluntary patrol groups .

"We operate within the law, which is why we're considering establishing a special force within the local police force to ensure city security. This will consist of trained, experienced personnel who will increase enforcement, not to replace the State Police, but to lend a hand and offer reinforcements," Nizzi explained during a press conference this morning in the council chamber of the city hall.

" Directives have already been issued to specifically monitor certain streets and homes where homes are being rented, even illegally, to countless people," the mayor continued. "We've already found two homes and identified the people living there, and we've filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office. More importantly, we're declaring those homes unfit for habitation and will be seized."

The mayor listed three main problem areas: the first is a building on Viale Aldo Moro, and two others in an industrial area where numerous homeless people have reportedly found shelter over time. "The last Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security met on August 24th in Sassari, where we shared the strategy to be implemented."

Regarding the mayoral ordinance banning parking along Via Fiume a few weeks ago, Nizzi emphasized that it's also a matter of urban decorum: "The street is too narrow to allow parking, behind which, moreover, ill-intentioned citizens were hiding. That street, like others, will be upgraded and the lighting will be improved." The mayor then appealed to residents: "Report any problems to us, even anonymously."
