A man from Olbia is hospitalized in serious conditions after ingesting poisonous mushrooms.

This is a 75-year-old man who showed up yesterday at the Giovanni Paolo II hospital in the Gallura city suffering from severe abdominal pain. He was then urgently transferred to Brotzu in Cagliari.

Accompanying the man were some family members who brought with them some mushrooms to show them to the doctors. According to what they said, the man had collected them in the countryside around the city and then decided to cook them and eat them for dinner. None of the other family members consumed the food cooked with mushrooms.

Immediately after dinner the man began to feel very ill and it was only thanks to the examination of the mushrooms brought to the emergency room that the experts of the Mycological Inspectorate of the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service , promptly notified by the doctors, were able to trace the origin of the illness, caused by the ingestion of the Amanita phalloides , one of the most toxic mycological species in absolute terms.

The 75-year-old allegedly confused these highly poisonous mushrooms with edible ones, which are very similar in appearance and characteristics.

Following the incident, the ASL Gallura reminds that the offices of the Mycological Inspectorate of the Food Hygiene and Nutrition Service are open in Olbia on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 to 13 in the relevant structure, the former San Giovanni di Dio hospital. While in Tempio Pausania the headquarters are in the Hospice of the ASL Gallura in via Limbara.

The service is available free of charge with direct access, without any waiting. "Before bringing the collected mushrooms to the table, it is necessary to have them examined by experts to know if they are edible" , explains the ASL.
