The 33rd edition of "Puliamo il Mondo," the Italian version of Clean Up the World, the largest environmental volunteering event in the world, is scheduled for Friday, November 21st, starting at 11:00 a.m. in Castelsardo.
The initiative is organized by the Department of Environment, Archaeological Heritage, and Education of the City of Castelsardo, in collaboration with the waste collection company Econova Srl, the Forestas Agency, and the staff of the Castelsardo forestry site, which has made the route to the areas where military posts are located accessible. Thirty-five young students from the Eleonora d'Arborea Comprehensive School of Castelsardo, as well as citizen volunteers, will be involved in an educational and interactive experience collecting abandoned waste from several World War II military posts, specifically the bunker at the "Schio" stronghold within the pine forest near the UNESCO World Heritage site "Elephant Rock."
"The Castelsardo administration continues its commitment to protecting and safeguarding the environment and the historical and archaeological heritage of the Castelsardo area, particularly involving the younger generations, the future custodians of the environment. It's impossible not to notice the small buildings, often circular in shape and located along the coastal areas or on promontories. These small reinforced concrete fortresses, also known as casemates, usually domed and equipped with thin horizontal slits for guns, built in strategic defensive positions, were designed and used during the Second World War," explains Environment Councilor Christian Speziga.
The military posts, linked to human events, some of which have been found with writings and engravings with dates and names of the soldiers who occupied them, are now part of the territory and should be considered cultural heritage.
At the end of the cleanup operations, Domingo Dettori, archaeologist from the Urban Planning Office of the Municipality of Castelsardo, will hold a conversation with participating students and volunteers about the hidden fortifications, bunkers, trenches, and anti-aircraft emplacements of the "Schio" stronghold.
