She was orphaned of both parents when she was 13 and her older sister was her mother. Luigia Dessì, a grandmother who has turned 100 today, always tells this episode with pride. Born on January 20, 1922 in nearby Gonnesa, she moved to the newly born Carbonia in the middle of the Second World War, in 1942, and here she met the miner Antonio Piras. With him he had seven children: Maria Teresa, Rosanna, Angelo, Liliana, Cesare, Roberto and Luisa. He boasts eleven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

This morning, while respecting Covid regulations, she was celebrated at home and received a visit from the deputy mayor of Carbonia, Michele Stivaletta. Nonna Luigia still remembers with pride when she started working very early, as a teenager, "to help support the family".
