A night of extraordinary checks took place between October 18th and 19th in the areas of Elmas, Quartu, and surrounding municipalities. Carabinieri officers from the Cagliari Provincial Command launched a wide-ranging operation to combat drug-related, weapons-related, and impaired driving crimes.
Eight people were reported, while in Via Sulcitana a chase took place following the attempted escape of a suspicious car, which is still being sought .
The operation, coordinated by the Cagliari Company with the support of the stations in Pula, Sarroch, Pirri, Villanova, Sant'Avendrace, and Stampace, and the Mobile Radio Unit, lasted until dawn. Dozens of checkpoints were set up and searches were conducted in areas considered at risk.
Among the most notable cases, a 43-year-old unemployed man from Assemini, already known to law enforcement, was reported for receiving stolen goods and possession of knives: the Carabinieri found him in possession of a stolen cell phone, two switchblades, and a small quantity of marijuana.
A 26-year-old from Decimomannu was caught driving without a license , which he had never obtained, while a 48-year-old from Cagliari was found with a knife hidden in his clothing. A 38-year-old from Monserrato was also reported for possession of several doses of cocaine and cash believed to be the proceeds of drug dealing.
Three drivers tested positive for alcohol, with levels ranging from 0.8 to over 2.3 grams per litre, well above the legal limit.
A 36-year-old Senegalese citizen was also reported for violating a prefectural order to stay away , while a man originally from French Guiana was again subjected to a similar order.
During a checkpoint on Via Sulcitana, in Elmas, officers from the Sant'Avendrace station, with the support of their colleagues from Pula, intercepted a white Fiat Punto which, upon seeing the patrol, reversed and attempted to flee.
A chase ensued through the local streets: in an attempt to escape, the driver attempted to ram the Carabinieri car. Only the officers' quick thinking prevented a head-on collision. The vehicle sustained minor damage to its bumper, but there were no injuries. The getaway car managed to escape; an investigation is underway to identify the perpetrator.
