No parking around, as announced . And, but it is not yet clear, apparently no food activity on the third floor, which "will be made available for initiatives and activities related to the life of the market". With (at least) a year of delay on the schedule, the executive project of the San Benedetto market of the future has arrived. The mayor of Cagliari, Massimo Zedda, illustrated it to the representatives of the operators' committee, with the councilor for Economic Development Carlo Serra.
At the moment the mayor does not provide too many details, but publishes some renderings (not new) of the structure that will be: «The market is and will remain open until the transfer to the temporary structure in Piazza Nazzari», he assures, «the transfer operations will begin, after the holidays, in January 2025. A process that has involved the market operators since the summer».
Before the final green light, "the project will be submitted to a conference of services for final approval in the coming days." But in the meantime, Zedda assures that "a lot of focus has been placed on accessibility and functionality, solving the historical problems of the current market . The logistics system for operators has been completely revised and accessibility has been improved, with the elimination of architectural barriers," he continues.
The sales area "will be developed on two levels, served by several elevators. The structure will be equipped with a photovoltaic roof, which covers the third level, which will be made available for initiatives and activities related to the life of the market".
Furthermore, in the executive project, " several suggestions from operators who know more than anyone else the needs of a complex and distinctive structure that will be increasingly enhanced, without distorting its historicity" were taken into account .
In the preliminary papers of the work, regarding the stalls outside, it is written that the few parking spaces outside will disappear to create a pedestrian square. The project decrees the farewell to 5,695 square meters of stalls crucial for a commercial activity. According to the technical offices, there is «the need to implement policies to strengthen collective, slow and sustainable mobility to connect the market with the neighboring neighborhoods and with the entire urban area».
