Abbanoa technicians at work in Cagliari to decommission the old water networks in the Villanova neighborhood. On Wednesday, construction work will continue between Via Orlando and Via Einaudi, in the section between Via Alghero and Via Abba. During the efficiency operations, between 8:30 and 17:00, pressure drops and temporary interruptions will occur in the affected streets. At the end of the intervention, the Abbanoa teams will be mobilized to carry out the maneuvers to restart the supply.

THE BUILDING SITE. Abbanoa has been working on improving the water network efficiency in the Villanova district of Cagliari for two weeks. To limit the impact of the work in progress on the traffic in the area as much as possible, the company in charge will complete the work in this first section and then move on to the subsequent sections where the work will proceed in the same step-by-step manner. In total, 11 sub-areas have been identified: section of via Einaudi between via Alghero and via Orlando; via Orlando; section of via Einaudi between via Abba and via Orlando; via Abba; section of via Einaudi between via Oristano and via Abba; section of via Oristano between via Eleonora d'Arborea and via Einaudi; section of via Oristano between via Einaudi and via Iglesias; section of via Iglesias between via Oristano and vico San Lucifero; section of via Iglesias between vico San Lucifero and via Eleonora d'Arborea; stretch of via Iglesias between via Eleonora d'Arborea and via Garibaldi.

In order not to interfere with traffic related to the presence of schools, work will be carried out starting from June on the streets of via Ozieri, via Macomer and via Tempio during the summer break of the school year.

THE CONTRACT. The new construction site for the efficiency of the water networks in Cagliari will lead to the complete replacement of a total of 1.2 kilometers of pipes between main lines and connections to utilities in the Villanova neighborhood. The streets involved in the renovation operations will be eight in total: Via Einaudi, via Orlando, via Abba, via Oristano and via Iglesias in the “Sonnino district” and via Ozieri, via Macomer and via Tempio in the “San Vincenzo Medio district”. The investment is 1.3 million euros: these resources are financed through the European development and cohesion funds “Fsc – “Interventions of strategic regional relevance for the water sector”. In the same line of financing there are also two ongoing contracts, for a further 8 million euros, which concern the renovation of the backbone that connects the San Michele reservoirs to those of Monti Urpinu.

CRITICAL ISSUES. The intervention is based on an analysis of the most degraded and fault-prone sections of pipelines. In the last ten years, almost a hundred repair interventions have been necessary on these roads. Starting from this data, the roads with the greatest critical issues were identified and a “priority scale” was subsequently developed based mainly on the number of faults and malfunctions of the same pipeline. In particular, the criticality index corresponds to the number of annual interventions per km and is extremely high in the sections in question.

MATERIALS. The main causes of this high index, which is materially reflected in water losses, are due to the use of materials that are not adequately resistant to the stresses to which the pipes are subjected daily. The interventions are part of the already started process of hydraulic improvement of the distribution network that has already seen the decommissioning of numerous sections of plastic or fibre cement pipes replaced by spheroidal cast iron pipes.

Also in this case, the old pipes, mainly made of steel, will be replaced with new ones in spheroidal cast iron with a diameter of 150 millimetres. In the areas subject to intervention, the old pipes already in cast iron but with a smaller diameter will also be replaced. The new pipes will therefore be, as mentioned, in spheroidal cast iron, externally galvanized and covered with bituminous products or synthetic resins and internally coated with aluminous cement mortar. To ensure a good seal, the joints between the pipes will be made with socket joints with sealing rings in high-resistance elastomeric material.
