Cagliari, the decline of the Bastione: «Regulations written by incompetents»
The concession to De Candia is suspended, the manager is angry: «Concrete pouring for 11 years, events prohibited, Caffè degli Spiriti closed: there is nothing for tourists»The music could also be heard outside the venue. And even Caffè De Candia del Bastione, in Cagliari, falls under the ax of the municipal regulation: in recent days the revocation of the concession of public land was imposed for a month. No outdoor tables and chairs.
Yet another measure that marks the slow but apparently inexorable decline of the terrace of Saint Remy, where no business remains open but an opprobrium of concrete that has covered the access staircase to the monument on the north side since time immemorial remains.
A situation that infuriates the manager of the recently closed place, Florian Kuster, who speaks of «application of regulations written by incompetent people who, instead of discussing and collaborating with sector operators and private companies, have the presumption of knowing how to manage a city from their own office".
After 11 years with a pouring of concrete in front of the place "and a construction site open on the most important monument in Cagliari", attacks Kuster bitterly, "finally Suape has notified us of the solution: revocation of the concession of public land"
Then the reconstruction: «The mobile theater closed in 2014. The elevators were blocked every other day from 2017. The De Candia platform was removed in 2018. The café of the spirits was closed in 2019. All events on the Bastion were prohibited from 2021. Tables and umbrellas were removed De Candia 2024".
The entrepreneur does some math: «Cagliari airport has 4,846,000 passengers a year between arrivals and departures, around 650,000 cruise passengers. Most arrive on the Bastion of Saint Remy under 40 degrees in August with great expectations and we all know what they find." Nothing, or almost nothing.
