A thousand sea urchins for sale, but they didn't have traceability documents. Plus other frozen fish products, whose origin could not be certified.

The goods were discovered and seized in one of the Su Siccu kiosks in Cagliari . The only ones authorized to administer the delicious echinoderms. In theory they should respect strict rules: they risked being closed for three years, due to a moratorium that was wanted by the regional council for the risk of sea urchins disappearing from the Sardinian sea. Then the reopening, after a long battle, but with stringent constraints of respect for the species and the environment.

Instead here is the discovery during an inspection by the Coast Guard and the Municipal Police of Cagliari.

In particular , about 1,000 sea urchins "illegally marketed, with related fines of 3,500 euros for the owner of the business", were seized and thrown back into the sea because they were alive, while "another frozen fish product was seized and the owner was fined an amount of 1500 euros".

The sea urchins and the remaining product, according to the coast guard, "were without traceability documentation, made mandatory by European and national legislation to protect public health and also aimed at preventing the marketing of products from sport fishing".

As part of this morning's checks, a boater engaged in fishing activities with unauthorized gear was also sanctioned: a fine of one thousand euros and material seized.
