Cabras, volunteers working to clean the beaches: 400 kilos of waste collected in one morning

Cabras is preparing for the warm season and, as per tradition, it does so by taking care of the territory.

The day, organized by the Municipality of Cabras with the coordination of the Marine Area, is the first of four mornings dedicated to the protection of the landscape that will take place on the main coastal beaches: in addition to Mare Morto, it will continue with Mari Ermi, Is Arutas and Maimoni on the dates of Saturday 12 April, Saturday 3 May and Sunday 18 May respectively.

In 2024, more than one ton of waste was collected through eco-days.

"This year too we have considered it a priority to dedicate ourselves to the environment before the great heat - explains the Environment Councillor Carlo Carta - The phenomenon of the presence of waste on the coast is physiological, because it is largely due to the movement of waste material due to sea currents, which pour numerous objects onto the beaches, especially plastic material, which crumbles over the years and becomes difficult to remove. It is precisely the wind and the currents that have meant that today at Mare Morto some buoys that were out at sea were recovered . However, waste is also present due to the reckless abandonment of man".

"The low participation in these environmental cleanup days - continues Carta - is a sign of a still too ephemeral sensitivity of citizens towards the environmental issue . But we do not give up and instead we are even more determined to invest in the new generations, so that they understand the importance of civic commitment".

The cleaning day of May 3rd on the beach of Is Arutas will be dedicated to the young students of the lower secondary schools, when the coast will be cleaned and, in collaboration with Legambiente, with the Forestry Corps of Environmental Supervision, the local police of Cabras and the Barracellare Company, the kilos of sand stolen and recovered during the last year will be released. «Environmental protection policies are increasingly necessary in a context that intends to communicate a territory with a strong eco-sustainable tourist vocation like Cabras - explains the mayor Andrea Abis - We cannot ignore a constant administrative and social commitment».
