It wasn't just New Year's greetings and panettone. During the holidays in Cabras, there was no shortage of tension, insults, and harassment toward the young people staying at the migrant center on Via Tharros, perpetrated by a group of local minors.
And it's not the first time it's happened. Several elderly residents and mothers out walking with their young children have also been targeted. Numerous reports have been received at the Carabinieri station and municipal offices.
This time, however, someone wanted to report yet another incident that occurred a few days ago in Piazza Stagno. It was a way to also alert the children's parents, hoping they would intervene as soon as possible.
This is Jamal Imuhammad, 26, a resident of the migrant center. He's a worker: in the evenings he works as a waiter at a local restaurant, and at night as a warehouse worker at a company in Santa Giusta.
«I was on the phone with my mother, very upset because of my grandfather's very serious health conditions, when a group of kids, all minors, between 12 and 15 years old, started making fun of me, swearing in Sardinian, which I now know well, and insulting me», says the young man.
At first, I pretended nothing was happening and continued walking, but then they started throwing gravel at me. At that point, I stopped and tried to explain to them the importance of respecting others, but to no avail. They laughed and continued teasing. Then I stopped and took a picture of them all, then posted the image on social media with their faces obscured but their bikes clearly visible. I hope their families will intervene. Only then, perhaps, can all this cruelty against us and beyond end. I also wanted to let the administrators know about the incident.
Mayor Andrea Abis promises action to combat the phenomenon : "We will certainly intervene after this latest, very serious incident," he says. "We will investigate the matter and, along with social workers, will be knocking on the children's doors. This pack of bullies must be stopped. Certain behaviors can no longer be tolerated."
