A completely illegal and abusive fishing gear, inside the Marine Protected Area "Penisola del Sinis - Isola di Mal di Ventre" near Capo San Marco. This is what the Oristano police found during a coastal surveillance operation that led to the seizure of the nets.
The intervention was carried out by the internal waters team of the general prevention and public rescue office of the Police Headquarters: during a patrol, aimed at environmental protection, they identified unmarked fishing equipment on the seabed . Subsequent checks then revealed that it was also completely illegal.
In difficult weather and sea conditions, the operators hoisted on board 15 fixed nets, complete with floats and lead rope, for a total length of about 750 meters and a height of 1.5 meters . The nets were positioned about 10 meters from the shoreline, following a meandering path, with the clear intent of maximizing their effectiveness.
The catch, in small quantities and still alive, was immediately thrown back into the sea . The illegal fishing equipment, in addition to the environmental damage and the violation of the prohibitions established to protect the Marine Protected Area, constituted a serious danger to the safety of navigation.
The nets have been seized. In addition, a complaint has been filed with the judicial authorities, for the moment against unknown persons .
