The data processed by the biologists speak clearly: in the depths of the Sinis Marine Protected Area, there are fewer and fewer sea urchins, despite the closure that has now lasted four years. This is why the Ministry of the Environment, which regulates the park, does not allow the collection of specimens even for 2025. However, the last word has not yet been said.

"I am preparing a note to send to Rome, to the general management of the Ministry, to request an urgent meeting - announces the mayor of Cabras and president of the park Andrea Abis - Small-scale artisanal fishing cannot and must not die. We must find a solution, whether it is a derogation or not".

The idea of reaching Rome was communicated to the fishermen by the mayor himself during the meeting called by the Municipality to present the data of the monitoring carried out on the Amp seabed, documentation then sent to the Ministry . "Unfortunately we are talking about unfavorable numbers - Abis announces - Data that tell us that after 4 full years of halt in the collection activity there has been no increase in the population".

On the causes Abis does not mince words: «It is clear that illegal fishing is taking place once again, and this is not good for the sea urchins of Cabras, about fifty of them, who instead have not dived into the body of water for four years. It is right that they protest».

During the meeting, the fishermen also put forward several proposals, beyond a probable exemption. One of all is compensation for the stoppage. Or a scrapping of the licenses in exchange for financial compensation. Now all that remains is to wait for the response from Rome.
