The Court of Cassation has annulled, without referral, the decisions of the Court of Appeal of Sassari on Rafael Lopes, the 36-year-old Brazilian who was the recipient of an international arrest warrant executed in Agrustos (Budoni) . Accepting the arguments of Lopes' defense attorney, Antonello Desini, the man was released from prison and for now there will be no extradition to Brazil.
Brazilian authorities accuse Lopes of shooting his partner (events from 2022), seriously injuring her and killing the child she was carrying. But the defense has pointed out that in Brazil the trial against Lopes is bringing to light elements that call into question the charges and furthermore Antonello Desini has categorically ruled out that his client escaped from Italy: «He entered Sardinia legally for work. He did not run away, he was not hiding in Agrustos, where he has been working as a maintenance worker with a regular contract for years».
Rafael Lopes was immediately released.
