An 18-meter-long vessel ran aground on the seabed in the Sant'Antioco Lagoon while passing the seafront promenade. Despite a navigation ban imposed by a maritime authority order for several years, the "Chiamasse IV"—the vessel's name— entered the canal, attempting to exit directly into the Gulf of Palmas, thus shortening the distance , without crossing into the open sea on the opposite side of the island.

Three adults on board, two men and a woman, suffered no serious injuries other than a terrifying fright when the vessel ran aground. However, they were fined by the Sant'Antioco Port Authority.

After three hours, the vessel managed to free itself, thanks in part to the assistance of a diver who suggested preparatory maneuvers to get out of the muddy seabed.
