With the birth center closed for renovations, Alghero's first born in 2024 saw the light of day in the emergency room. «The mother arrived at the hospital a few days ago at 5 in the morning with labor in the expulsive phase and thanks to the healthcare staff in the emergency room, obstetrics and anesthesia everything went well in the end. Because although the birth center in Alghero has been closed, emergencies happen here too", write the city councilors of the Per Alghero group in a note.

«However, even more so, the strong warning remains for a hospital that serves a catchment area of 80,000 people, with an exponential increase in the summer season, which has the birth center closed and has no possibility of having cardiologists present during the night hours» the note continues. «But that's not enough: there is also a lack of paediatricians. Even thermal cradles and incubators, in these cases, appear not to be immediately available. However, there is a need to transfer the newborns to Sassari to go to a nursery department which has been closed in Alghero. Anesthetists, among other things, are not necessarily neonatologists and in the case of cardiac problems, the cardiology specialists who the anesthetists themselves should replace are not present in the hospital. An absurdity that has been denounced several times."

The story of the little girl born in the emergency room, a symbol of the lack of health services, was also denounced by Lina Passrò of the "Blue Ribbons Pink Ribbons" committee which has been fighting for years to strengthen the two city hospitals.
