A day of violence occurred yesterday in Bancali. The penitentiary police union ConSiPe and its national secretary Roberto Melis reported the incident, describing "a situation now out of control."
"An inmate," Melis stated in a statement, " started a fire in his cell, generating thick smoke and creating an extremely dangerous situation . During rescue operations, a ceiling light, unstable due to the high temperatures, collapsed , hitting the inmate himself. He was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital, while two other inmates were evacuated and transferred to another detention unit ."
According to an initial reconstruction, the fire "was apparently used as a deliberate diversion by some inmates from another section, who took advantage of the confusion to carry out an attack on another inmate."
The perpetrator, identified, was transferred to another Sardinian facility. " To this already critical situation," the statement continues, "another incident occurred yesterday: during a search, a new inmate attacked a member of the Corps, throwing his shoes at him and punching him in the face. The officer was examined and assessed by the doctor on duty, while the inmate was immediately restrained and calmed ."
"We can no longer accept," Melis denounces, "that our colleagues are attacked, humiliated, and put in danger every day. The Penitentiary Police are supporting a system that is collapsing, without adequate tools, insufficient staff, and without the political attention this emergency requires. It is time for the Administration and the Government to intervene with concrete, immediate, and structural measures."
