Security has officially landed on the Alghero City Council's political agenda. The group leaders' conference accepted the proposal from the president of the city council, Mimmo Pirisi, initiating the process that will lead to the convening of an open city council meeting dedicated to the issue.

The initiative follows a request made by both Mayor Raimondo Cacciotto during the May 28th session, and by Councilor Mulas, who two days later filed an official invitation to discuss the issue of crime in the chamber.

The decision comes in the wake of the meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, convened by the Prefecture and held yesterday morning. The meeting discussed the string of recent arson attacks. In addition to Prefect Grazia La Fauci, the meeting was attended by Sassari Public Prosecutor Armando Mammone and, via video link, the Attorney General of the Cagliari Court of Appeal , Luigi Patronaggio. Mayor Cacciotto was also present, and outlined the situation emerging from discussions with law enforcement in recent months.

"This is a situation that must be viewed through three distinct perspectives," explains the mayor. The first concerns urban safety and quality of life. "Life in Alghero is good, and this is something everyone agrees on." The second concerns the issue of possible mafia infiltration: "Since the beginning of our mandate, we have maintained a high level of vigilance on this front, including through the protocol signed with the Prefecture, which allows for a constant exchange of information with the Economic Development offices to detect any suspicious signs."

The third element concerns recent criminal incidents, including the fires that have struck the area in recent weeks. "No common cause emerges," observes Cacciotto, "and often these incidents are linked to private disputes."

The issue will be addressed at the next City Council meeting, most likely scheduled for June 10th.
