The mayor of Porto Torres, Massimo Mulas, has signed the ordinance to secure the roofs of the imposing industrial building, owned by the Sarda Laterizi company, located in the production area, between via Pigafetta and via dell'Industria, along provincial road 34, a road still closed to traffic due to the asbestos emergency.

The collapse of some parts of Eternit material that ended up on the roadway due to the strong wind that, in recent days, has created inconvenience throughout the city, has alarmed the municipal administration. The mayor has authorized the municipal offices to send letters to the relevant bodies - Region, Province, Provincial Industrial Consortium and Prefecture of Sassari - in order to begin the interlocutory phase for the establishment of the control room, in order to proceed with the removal of asbestos from the roofs of all abandoned and disused industrial buildings.

The provision, dated December 31, 2024, requires the Sarda Laterizi company to intervene promptly to immediately remove the asbestos roofing sheets and, in agreement with the Province of Sassari as the road management body, to carry out the operations in conditions of maximum safety. Furthermore, it is necessary to remove any dangerous part of the roof by making the building safe, as the dangerous situation could evolve negatively, further endangering public and private safety. "The fragments of the sheet currently present in the stretch of the SP 34 are presumably made of asbestos cement and must therefore be removed as quickly as possible as they could be subject to fragmentation and constitute a source of fibres dispersed into the environment", the mayor underlined.
