Armando Puddu, 68, the restaurateur from Cagliari who had been living in Indonesia for a few years, did not make it. He had been hospitalized in a coma at Bangkok Hospital Samui, in Thailand, following a stroke in his sleep that caused a cerebral hemorrhage. Puddu died without being able to return home.
His vacation with his wife in November had turned into a nightmare, with the need to obtain immediate funds to support a complex course of urgent care. The family, with the help of the embassy, had managed to keep the cost of hospitalization as low as possible, but - after having used most of the money at their disposal for two emergency operations - they had to face another emergency: the Indonesian insurance did not cover expenses abroad and the hospital stay cost the considerable sum of 3,000 euros per day plus medical expenses, for a total of 60,000 euros, which had to be found in a very short time to follow a course of treatment that includes ten days in intensive care and another week in normal therapy.
His wife Giusy and two children Edoardo and Federica, who also live in Indonesia, had started a fundraiser: "We cannot move our father for life or death reasons and we have run out of money for the two emergency operations," Edoardo Puddu explained. "Only this hospital has the technology to treat the cerebral hemorrhage he had and it is mandatory that it remains there for intensive care. We ask the Sardinian people and anyone who can give us a hand to support our fundraiser: with a little help from everyone we can easily reach the amount needed to bring him back to Indonesia, where insurance covers the entire rehabilitation period and there are specialist doctors who can follow him." The fundraiser was opened on the GoFundMe platform, with the title "United for Armando: let's help him return home." Today the bad news: Armando Puddu died at 10:43. His son, Edoardo, broke the news.
