The vehicles arrived yesterday, while the workers and engineers went into action a short while ago. The wait that has lasted for years for the fishermen is over. This morning, extraordinary maintenance work began on canal 17, in the territory of Arborea, which connects the Corru mannu and Corru s'ittiri ponds to the sea. This is the area suffering the most in the province of Oristano: where there was once water, now you can walk.
In the field are the workers of the Consorzio di Bonifica, the body to which the Region has entrusted the important intervention . The mechanical means will immediately go into action to move all the sandy sediments that do not allow the entry of water from the sea. "After various discussions we agreed together where to start," explains the president of the Consorzio Pesca di Marceddì, Antonio Loi. "Our pond needs oxygen immediately. The operators will operate from the sides of the canal. It is a miracle that we did not see the pond transform into a stretch of dead fish."
The president of the Land Reclamation Consortium Carlo Corrias, explains however that this is a very delicate intervention: «Also because we are close to the sea», he underlines. «First some tests will be carried out, thanks to the intervention of two mechanical operating machines, to understand in essence how to organize the intervention in detail. Then the construction site will be set up immediately. It is impossible to know in how many days it will be possible to finish the operation: the important thing is to start, it is an emergency intervention before the summer season begins ».
The dredging of the canals to restore the oxygenation of the waters will then continue in the Cabras lagoon, in Mar'e Pontis . Here the vehicles will have to eliminate all the mercerella that has expanded in the pond in recent years. The workers will then move to S'Ena Arrubia, still in the territory of Arborea, and finally to Is Benas, Municipality of San Vero Milis.
