An old battery ended up among the bulky waste . This may be the cause of the fire that devastated part of the Masangionis composting plant in the Arborea area last night. The damage was extensive, and the bulky waste collection service has been suspended for a week to allow the warehouse to be repaired.
The alarm was raised late yesterday evening when the fire began to gather strength among stacks of old mattresses and other appliances. The plant's firefighting team, managed by the Oristano Industrial Consortium , responded immediately. They quickly attempted to contain the flames until firefighters arrived, preventing them from spreading to the rest of the facility.
Firefighters worked for over four hours to completely extinguish the fire and secure the area. Cleanup operations continued today; the warehouse was cleared, and workers moved the burned materials to the outside yard, which will now need to be re-characterized and disposed of. Inspections of the structure are also underway.
"The fire likely started automatically due to the presence of some batteries or a flare that had been disposed of irregularly," explained director Marcello Siddu. "We often find similar components among the waste." Similar materials actually have well-defined disposal routes, reserved for hazardous and flammable waste. "The bulky waste service will be suspended for a week," Siddu added, "the time needed to fix and reorganize the part of the facility where the fire occurred."
There had also been two fires in the Masangionis structure in the past .
