The AOU of Sassari has provided some clarifications on the death of Giovanni Carta, the 91-year-old who died last week in the Geriatrics ward of the Santissima Annunziata Hospital.
According to the hospital, "based on the clinical records and unofficial findings from the forensic medical examinations, pending the official conclusions of the autopsy, the neurological picture is consistent with a spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhage, likely already present upon arrival at the hospital. This is an acute event that can occur suddenly and is not related to recent trauma. Traumatic injuries attributable to negligent conduct by the department staff must therefore be ruled out."
"The patient's clinical condition," says Patrizia Tilocca, director of the Geriatrics Department at the University Hospital of Sassari, "was already severely compromised upon his arrival. During his clinical course, several CT scans and neurosurgical reevaluations were performed, and despite the care provided, his condition unfortunately progressively worsened until his death."
While understanding the family's pain, Tilocca continues, "it is essential to adhere to the clinical documentation.
The available data does not indicate recent trauma or improper behavior by the staff. The patient arrived with a severe neurological condition and already evident clinical deterioration. The team operated with professionalism, fully respecting protocols and the patient's dignity.
"In a delicate context like this," adds Mario Palermo, Special Commissioner of the AOU of Sassari, "we believe it is essential to ensure transparency, respect, and rigor. We await the official autopsy results and will make them available as soon as they are available. Our priority remains the protection of patients, their families, and the daily work of our professionals."
