Alghero, the eternally unfinished former cotton mill: is redevelopment work about to begin?
The dream of a multifunctional center with theater and laboratories has remained just that for the momentSeventy years of waiting have passed, amidst neglect and decay. For the residents of the Sant'Agostino neighborhood of Alghero, the redevelopment of the former cotton mill is an unattainable dream. Once a 4,000-square-meter industrial hub, it was decommissioned and abandoned in the 1960s.
In 2021, the site was definitively transferred from the Regional Government to the Municipality of Alghero, and thus the urban regeneration work initiated by the Conoci administration began. This work was unexpectedly suspended a few months later due to a dispute with the winning contractor . The dream of a multipurpose center with a theater and workshops remained just that. The municipal administration has resumed the process, starting the cleanup of the area, but aims to restart the work. Meanwhile, the main building has been occupied illegally.
On Via Marconi, cars park on the sidewalks; on Via Guarnerio, they're covered in rusty fences. A temporary solution is being considered : a temporary parking lot like those built in various parts of the city.
