During the night, unknown individuals set fire to the parking lot of a car rental company on provincial road 44 , across the street from the Riviera del Corallo airport terminal. The flames engulfed 62 new cars , turning the area into a fiery inferno. A total of 48 were completely destroyed by the flames, while the other 14 suffered extensive damage. Firefighters and police responded to the scene.
Two firefighter teams from the headquarters, the team from the Porto Torres detachment and the official on duty, then the military from Alghero and the Polaria, which allowed the firefighter vehicles to enter the airport for a rapid supply of water.
According to initial reports, there is no doubt about the arson nature of the fire : this is the second incident in just a few months to the detriment of the same car rental company, following the fire on March 14th.
“At 5 in the morning I heard a crackling sound and immediately a large flame arose,” a witness said.
The Sassari Prosecutor's Office is now taking action on the matter. Prosecutor Armando Mammone will participate in the next Provincial Committee on Public Order and Security, convened by Prefect Grazia La Fauci for June 3rd, which will necessarily discuss the situation that has arisen in Alghero . Just two nights ago, a business owner's van was set on fire in a parking lot in front of the cemetery. In the days prior, a local police officer's car was defaced.
"This is an exceptionally serious event that profoundly shakes the entire Alghero community," denounces Marco Tedde , Forza Italia national councilor. "We are no longer faced with sporadic or marginal incidents," he continues, "but with an escalation that risks compromising the climate of serenity and security of our community and severely impacting the city's economic and productive fabric."
Forza Italia expresses solidarity with entrepreneur Stefano Ledda and the workers involved, but calls for an immediate response from all political parties.
The cars appear to belong to Galdieri Rent, a car rental company based in Salerno, and were parked in an outdoor area along the airport's provincial road.
These are practically new cars, ready to enter service with the start of the tourist season now upon us.
