A tool for fishing illegal red coral, outlawed since 1994 by the Region and the European Union, potentially "devastating" for the marine ecosystem. This is the "rezzariello", otherwise known as "ingenuity".
The Coast Guard of the Bosa Maritime District Office, as part of the control activities on the fishing chain and in particular on the removal of coral, has identified and seized one in the stretch of sea about 10 miles north-west from the mouth of the river Temo. It was connected to a white buoy, lacking the signals required by law.
"This fishing system - explains the Port Authority -, for which it is necessary to fasten a fishing unit to the stern and subsequently a trailer that allows it to 'plow' the seabed, consists of a long and sturdy chain which is connected several pieces of net in which coral branches get entangled ".
Investigations into the find are continuing. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard recalls that "red coral, the target of this type of illegal fishing, is a resource subject to particular protection both at regional and community level, whose high commercial value encourages illegal collection and subsequent sale - without respecting the traits of traceability - of the precious product ".
