After the fire and the reclamation, it's time to count the damage: according to Coldiretti estimates, there are 700 hectares incinerated between Posada, Siniscola and Gairo, due to the devastating fires that broke out between Saturday and Sunday.

At least fifteen companies are affected in Baronia. While in the center of Ogliastra the environmental damage is enormous.

With the fires large portions of olive groves and vineyards went up in smoke, with extensive damage also to windbreak plants and the flames that licked sheds and land with beehives and field vegetables. But the fire did not spare even rural houses, equipment and agricultural infrastructure including trolleys, fences, irrigation systems and machinery, as well as a completely destroyed greenhouse in the area between Siniscola and Posada. A dozen sheep died, while some cattle suffered burns.

In Sarrabus, between Muravera and Castiadas, citrus groves, a riding stable and other small businesses in the area were destroyed.

According to Coldiretti Nuoro-Ogliastra, the acts of these days, although there are still no confirmations «are not considered linked to the actions of serial arsonists but rather to transversal acts and strategies and speculative processes. Certainly these are not actions to be traced back to the world of the countryside ».

According to Leonardo Salis, president of Coldiretti Nuoro-Ogliastra, «those who work in agriculture and livestock know well how fundamental it is to preserve the territory and the environment. But if today the agro-zootechnical sector of the territory has suffered serious damage with important repercussions for the economy of companies», he underlines, «it has been even worse for the great landscape and environmental heritage, devastated as well as the wildlife in the process of restocking who could not have escaped from the flames".

"The depopulation taking place in our region does not help to curb these phenomena", adds the director of the association, Alessandro Serra, "living in the countryside means presiding over the territory and, therefore, curbing these acts". Finally, for Serra, "we don't understand why, in hyper-technological times like the ones we live in, we don't use all the useful tools such as drones, infrared, camera traps and other means that can act as a deterrent", he concludes, "now the damage is counted, but we thank those who worked to help in the field such as the police, firefighters and civil protection, together with the Forestas operators. Also thanks to them it was possible to contain an already important damage to our island ».
