Around 600 nurses are missing in Sardinian hospitals. The problem is that – as with doctors – the profession is becoming less and less attractive. Heavy work shifts, low salaries, demotion, so much so that those who sued are currently seeing their damages recognised.

Result: university enrollments are continuously decreasing, many contracted workers are resigning, many others choose to leave for countries where they receive better economic and professional treatment, and in Italy - because obviously the problem concerns all regions - there is trying to recruit foreigners (Health Minister Schillaci announced an agreement with India in recent days).

“The situation is increasingly complicated,” warns Diego Murracino, regional manager of the Nursing Up union. "In addition to the fact that the staff is missing between 500 and 600 nurses, in the hospitals on the island we experience the worst conditions in Europe, and clearly in the large hospitals, in Cagliari and Sassari, we suffer much more than in the peripheral ones."
