An 18-month-old girl in prison, locked up in the female section of the Uta prison, inside a nursery cell together with her young mother who has to serve a definitive sentence.

"Once again - says Maria Grazia Caligaris of the association Socialismo Diritti Riforme Odv - a creature of a few months forced to suffer detention as an innocent person in the absence of alternative equipped spaces, the hope is that he can leave the cell as soon as possible".

The little girl's mother must serve a sentence of one year and eight months for a 2019 crime.

"Unfortunately - Caligaris states - it is not the first time that a creature with only a few months of life has crossed the prison gate. The circumstance is obviously linked to the fact that a newborn cannot be separated from its mother. It is certain that such a fragile presence requires great attention from the entire structure and in particular from the Penitentiary Police and the Health Area. The Institute must take charge not only of vaccinations but also of nutrition and pediatric visits. A condition that keeps the Health Area busy, with particular care. The hope is that her stay in prison, beyond the sensitivity of all the prison operators, can end in the shortest possible time".

The president of SDR also says she is worried about the mother's condition: "She shows strong anxiety that cannot be alleviated with drugs because the woman is breastfeeding." She is a 26-year-old Roma woman, mother of five children, the eldest is 9 years old. "She lives with apprehension being separated from her children who have remained at home with their father, the case requires the immediate intervention of the Supervisory Magistrates' Office in order to order house arrest for the woman."
