Even the last day of a two-thirds quorum for the election of the President of the Republic ends, as expected, with a stalemate. Yet the day, although not decisive, is significant ( THE CHRONICLE ).

Starting from the outcome of the third vote in Montecitorio: the white ballots drop, down from 527 yesterday to 412. During the counting, the outgoing president Sergio Mattarella prevails with 125 votes and Guido Crosetto launched by surprise by FdI with 114, almost double the 63 great voters of Giorgia Meloni's party. In third place is the jurist Paolo Maddalena with 61 votes of Alternative there and of many former M5s, followed by Pier Ferdinando Casini who stops at 52.

THE DAY - Despite a heralded unity, the center-right appears divided on the third day: FdI decides to advance Guido Crosetto's candidacy at mid-morning while Fi and Lega once again indicate a blank ballot.

After the fading of the squad proposed yesterday by the center-right (Marcello Pera, Letizia Moratti and Carlo Nordio), the name of the President of the Senate Elisabetta Alberti Casellati makes its way. But she too does not find favor with her opponents. Giuseppe Conte says that this choice would be "a grave error of the center-right" and that using the name of Casellati for an opposition without a shared solution is "a serious disgrace for the Presidency of the Senate".

The words of the secretary of the Democratic Party Enrico Letta are decisive: the "absurd and incomprehensible" operation of the center-right which would like to bring the second position of the state to the Hill "would represent the most direct way to blow everything up".

In the afternoon a new indiscretion arrives: Matteo Salvini would be trying to dissolve the impasse with a convergence on the name of Sabino Cassese, refined jurist and emeritus member of the Constitutional Court, whom he would have even met. A rumor that the League is quick to deny.

"The solution may be close," says Salvini: "Keep your cell phones open, it will be a long night. I cannot allow Parliament to remain hostage to the vetoes of the center-left, we have made high-profile names and we will do others", he adds. And in the evening, to the big voters, he said he will meet with government allies.

READ: “LET'S VOTE FRIDAY” - From tomorrow, bringing the thirteenth president of the Republic to the Quirinale will be easier: half plus one will be enough, that is “only” 505 votes.

For the secretary of the Pd Enrico Letta, however, at least one more day will be needed: the ongoing negotiations could close with the vote on the new president on Friday. The indication in the assembly of the great Pd electors is clear: "Unlike the others, we started with the four cardinal points of our compass and we are arriving with the same cardinal points. This I claim: thanks to our firmness the center right has done because any president we will vote on Friday - some of us will be happy, some others less - we will have achieved the biggest goal: once the biased candidacy is over, a name that is not biased and authoritative will be negotiated. it is our victory: there will be no right-wing president. "

The name on which we return to work is that of the eve: Pier Ferdinando Casini. The way to propose Mario Draghi for the Quirinale, with a choice on which Fdi would not be hostile, seems remote for now. And among the ranks of the M5s and part of the Pd there is still the hope that the request for an encore will be reached by Sergio Mattarella.
