The long queues registered in front of the Cagliari Police Headquarters on the occasion of the extraordinary Sunday opening for the issuance of passports , which saw a thousand people queuing since the early hours of the morning , sparked political controversy.

It was triggered by Francesca Ghirra, a deputy of the Alleanza Verdi Sinistra , pointing her finger at the Viminale, who had already spoken in the Montecitorio courtroom during question time in recent days precisely on the difficulty of obtaining a passport for work, health or simply to be able to travel.

«The Open Day at the Police Headquarters for the renewal of passports in Cagliari today turned into an endless wait, among hundreds of people on the street and on the sidewalks starting early in the morning, angry people who had the patience to wait and having to go back after hours and hours of waiting », writes Ghirra in a note. Adding: «With an urgent question we raised the problem of delays in the renewal or issuance of passports for thousands of people throughout Italy with an urgent question to the Chamber of Deputies. The question - continues Ghirra - concerns above all the shortage of employees in the competent offices of the Viminale : it is useless to have the agents work on Sunday morning if structural solutions cannot be found. Minister Piantedosi, however, when answering the courtroom, did not refer to new hires: this is the heart of the problem. He did not speak of the many temporary workers left at home at the end of the year, with the rejection of our amendments which called for stabilization".

«Piantedosi should apologize - concludes Ghirra - and stand in line for a few hours to figure out the problem . We will continue to ensure that the Minister takes care of it, rather than thinking about how to make sea rescue complicated for NGOs, so that all citizens are recognized the right to have their own passport quickly".
