Ballots open until 3 pm in Sardinia, where citizens are called to elect 98 mayors (out of a total of 377 municipalities).

They should have been 102, but the vote was postponed to Gonnoscodina, Seneghe, Sorgono and Zerfaliu, municipalities where no list of candidates was presented.

At 11pm on Sunday, according to data from the Interior Ministry, the turnout was 45.43%. A figure down by more than twenty points compared to the previous administrative, which at the same time had registered a turnout of 66.73% (but in that case we voted in a single day).

In the three cities with more than 15,000 inhabitants, where the ballot is scheduled, in Olbia 44.50% (66.68%) voted, in Carbonia 41.60% (61.72%), while in Capoterra the turnout was 41.79% (60.93%).

In detail, voting takes place in three municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, 22 in the province of Nuoro, 16 in the province of Oristano, 23 in the province of Sassari, 34 in Southern Sardinia.

In 35 municipalities there is only one candidate, who will challenge the quorum. Reached 40% of the voters (bar lowered due to Covid), he will be elected, otherwise the commissioner will start. They are Barrali, Decimoputzu, Pauli Arbarei, San Nicolò Gerrei, Sant'Andrea Frius, Selegas, Turri, Villanovaforru, Villaperuccio, Villasalto, Baradili, Bonarcado, Cuglieri, Marrubiu, Nureci, Ruinas, Scano di Montiferro, Solarussa, Tramatza, Baunei, Belvì , Borore, Gadoni, Loculi, Orani, Orosei, Ovodda, Silanus, Talana, Triei, Alà dei Sardi, Ardara, Monteleone Rocca Doria, Muros and Nughedu San Nicolò.

THE MAIN CHALLENGES - The eyes are focused on the largest municipalities: three with over 15 thousand inhabitants, but only in Capoterra and Carbonia if no candidate gets 50% plus 1 of the votes, the mayor will be decided in the ballot on 24 and 25 October. In fact, in Olbia there are two challengers .

And it is precisely in these three cities that the vote risks becoming a test case for the center-right at the helm of the Region, which has already lost in Quartu and Nuoro last year. What is certain is that the sides, apart from Olbia, are anything but granite. In Capoterra both center-right and center-left are divided and run with two candidates each. In Carbonia Psd'Az and Udc support the candidate dem.

But let's go in order. The ballot in Capoterra is very likely, where the sides are divided within them and there are even five candidates for the position of mayor.

For the center-left there is Beniamino Piga , who runs with six lists also supported by the outgoing first citizen Francesco Dessì. The "official" one, because the line-up is split and among the candidates for mayor there is also the dem Efisio Demuru , with two lists.

There is also a split on the right: on the one hand Gianluigi Marras supported by Forza Italia, Fratelli d'Italia and Riformatori, on the other Beniamino Garau supported by Lega, Psd'Az and Sardegna 20Venti.

Finally, Attilio Congiu , supported by the PSI and a civic list.

In Carbonia (the only capital at the polls) there is a break between the Democratic Party and the 5 Star Movement, while the center-right is united with the traditional alliance Lega, Forza Italia and Fratelli d'Italia (but without Psd'Az and Udc), with Daniela Garau as candidate to the mayor's chair.

For the Democratic Party there is Pietro Morittu , who collects the support, albeit unofficial, of political forces that in the Region are in the majority with Psd'Az and Udc. Six slates in support of the candidate dem.

Finally, the regional secretary of Article 1 Luca Pizzuto, former regional councilor, supported by Article 1, M5S, Pci and Psi. As in Capoterra, the current first citizen Paola Massidda, of the 5 Star Movement, does not reappear.

Instead, the outgoing mayor returns to Olbia , where despite there are more than 15 thousand inhabitants there will be no ballot, unless there is a sensational draw. In fact, there are only two candidates in the running.

Settimo Nizzi , 64, is supported by the entire center-right and in total, including the civics, by six lists. He is aiming for the second term in a row, fourth in total since he administered the city from 1997 to 2007.

Against him is Augusto Navone , 65, at the helm of the Great Civic Coalition which presents eight lists. It has the support of the center left and the 5 Star Movement.
