A 79-year-old woman – Paola Abis, originally from Sardinia – died after being hit and crushed against a wall by a driverless car that had “slipped” in reverse down a slope because the handbrake had not been applied.

The incident occurred shortly before 5 pm on Friday in Besozzo (Varese) in via 25 aprile. After the alarm, officers from the local police command intervened on site and reconstructed the incident.

According to initial findings, the car, with Swiss license plates, had been parked by a woman along the slightly sloping road. The handbrake, as mentioned, was not engaged, as the driver intended to make a short stop to reach the nearby pharmacy.

The car, in neutral, due to the slope, moved in reverse for about fifty meters along the street, ending up hitting the 79-year-old . The woman was crushed against the wall of a building, right in front of the real estate agency where the victim's daughter works, who the 79-year-old had stopped by to say hello.

Then the rescuers immediately intervened, but the attempts to save the old lady's life were unfortunately in vain.
