Saman's murder was premeditated by the family clan, who could not tolerate the girl's desire for autonomy .

This is what the Court of Assizes of Appeal of Bologna wrote in the sentence sentencing the parents and two cousins of the 18-year-old Pakistani girl to life imprisonment and the uncle to 22 years.

The decision to commit the murder - as stated in the reasons - was taken "by the clan with cold lucidity and planned for a suitable period of time, considering it unbearable that Saman had decided not only to choose to live his life freely and in complete autonomy" but also "in discord with the ethical values and religious beliefs" of the family .
