Run over and killed by the woman whose purse he had stolen, threatening her with a knife, on the Viareggio seafront. This is how Said Malkoun died, a 47-year-old Algerian with no fixed abode and an illegal immigrant in Italy, where he lived on theft and expedients.

She, a 65-year-old Italian shopkeeper, immediately went looking for him after the mugging. She found him in a few minutes and killed him by hitting him several times on a sidewalk with her Mercedes. On impact, the man ended up crushed against the window of a store selling naval electronic systems and equipment, and when he was on the ground the car ran over him at least three times. Then the woman got out of the car, took her bag back and ran away.

The 47-year-old, rescued by 118, was resuscitated but later died in hospital. The woman was immediately tracked down and charged with voluntary homicide.

According to what has emerged, no country in the Maghreb has recognized Said Melkoun as its citizen and the expulsion attempts activated by Italy with diplomatic contacts had always had a negative outcome. He was also accompanied twice to a CPR, but without the confirmation of a country, neither Algeria nor others, that accepted his repatriation, he returned free. Said Malkoun has been in Italy for 10 years. He has been in various cities, including Rome and Bologna. In recent times he has gravitated towards Viareggio and Versilia.

The episode has triggered emotional reactions, even on social media, linked to difficult months for security on the coast. Thefts, robberies, fights, assaults and drug dealing have characterized the summer, disturbing the safety of residents and vacationers of places historically pleasant for vacations.
