Ponte Morandi, all 59 defendants to trial: the trial begins on 7 July, the settlements of Aspi and Spea accepted
The finds of the collapsed viaduct will remain under sequestration, but can be moved, thus allowing the Municipality to complete the park of Memory
The former CEO of Autostrade per l'Italia, Giovanni Castellucci, was indicted for the collapse of the Morandi bridge , the tragedy that cost the lives of 43 people on 14 August 2018. At trial, with the first hearing set for July 7, the other 58 people accused in the proceedings also go.
So decided the judge for the preliminary hearing, Paola Faggioni, after about an hour and a half in the council chamber. Faggioni read for about two hours the reasons why he rejected all the objections of nullity raised by the defendants' lawyers, including the one that it would not have been possible to read all the documents because too expensive software would have been needed. The finds of the collapsed bridge will remain under seizure, although they can be moved, thus allowing the Municipality to complete the park of Memory.
"Today the confirmation of what we have been supporting for all this time has arrived. For this reason we are obviously very satisfied", the words of Egle Possetti, president of the Committee on Remembrance of the victims of the Morandi bridge. Satisfaction also for the decision of the gup Paola Faggioni to leave the finds under sequestration but allowing them to move: "In this way we will be able to create the park of memory and this is very important".
The judge for the preliminary hearing in Genoa Paola Faggioni also accepted the plea bargaining of Autostrade and Spea, the former subsidiary that was in charge of maintenance, at the end of the preliminary hearing. The two companies will pay around 30 million out of the trial. The prosecutor had given a favorable opinion.
