Pomicino, 86 years old, died this afternoon in Rome , in a clinic where he had been hospitalized for a few days.
Born in Naples on September 3, 1939, a medical graduate, Pomicino was a key figure in the Christian Democracy party and linked to the faction led by Giulio Andreotti.
Having entered politics in 1970 as a municipal councilor for the DC in the Campania capital, he was elected to the Chamber for the first time in 1976 and then for several subsequent legislatures (until 1992).
Pomicino was president of the Budget Committee, then Minister of Civil Service in the De Mita government (1988-1989) and then Head of the Budget in the Andreotti VI and VII governments.
Pomicino was implicated in the 1993 Clean Hands investigation.
In the 2004 European elections, he was elected to the European Parliament with Mastella's Udeur party. In 2006, he left Brussels because he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies on the list formed by the DC and the New PSI. In 2008, he was not re-elected.
