A petty argument between roommates in Palermo ends in tragedy . A 53-year-old man , Francesco Spataro, was reportedly stabbed to death by his roommate . The murder took place in an apartment on Via Sampolo in Palermo, where the assailant then barricaded himself, turning on the gas and threatening to blow up the entire building.

Finally, after negotiating with the police, he opened the door. Francesco Cusumano, 38, was arrested. He has a criminal record for mistreatment and a restraining order.

The victim and the 38-year-old shared the apartment, owned by an elderly man, with a third roommate who had gone out to do the shopping at the time of the murder.

The alarm mobilized the police and firefighters who evacuated the building, blocking the entire road and suspending the gas supply.

It all started when some residents of the building on Via Sampolo alerted the Carabinieri after hearing screams coming from the second-floor apartment. Upon arriving, they smelled gas and immediately evacuated the entire building.

On site, in addition to emergency vehicles, there was also a bomb squad.

It has emerged recently that arguments had frequently been heard inside the apartment. It appears to have been over bill payments or rent. At the height of yet another argument, the 38-year-old allegedly stabbed Spataro, then barricaded himself in the apartment and turned on the gas, threatening to blow up the building.

From that moment on, the Carabinieri began negotiations to convince him to come out.

Cusumano was then questioned by the prosecutor leading the investigation into the crime.
