The National Fire Brigade is mourning the death of Antonio Ciccorelli, the department head missing since yesterday evening after his service car was swept away by a flooded stream on the SS89 between San Severo and Apricena, in the province of Foggia.
The man had intervened yesterday evening together with his colleagues to help motorists who had broken down after being surprised by a water bomb. As far as we know, the body was found in a canal that runs alongside the state road . The firefighter was part of the Fire Brigade group that left from Foggia.
The lifeless body was recovered by fellow divers inside the car , just downstream from the point where it had been overwhelmed during rescue operations due to bad weather. The colleague who had managed to abandon the car was saved, but was injured and transported to the hospital in non-serious conditions.
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing," said the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi. "I express my closeness and deepest condolences to his family and to the entire National Corps. To the colleague who was in the car, who was injured and hospitalized, I wish a speedy recovery."
