A young woman was arrested this morning by the Reggio Calabria Flying Squad on charges of suffocating her two newborn children, hiding their bodies, and suppressing the body of another child born three years ago. The investigating judge issued a house arrest warrant against the woman, with an electronic tag, at the request of the Prosecutor's Office.

The investigation began in July last year, when the young woman's parents found the bodies of the two newborns wrapped in a blanket in a closet in their home in Pellaro.

The 25-year-old woman had already been under investigation since the bodies were discovered by her mother in a closet in their home due to the foul odor. The woman immediately notified the police, triggering an investigation launched by the Prosecutor's Office and conducted by the Flying Squad, which developed based on viewing video surveillance systems in the area.

From this, investigators determined that the girl was alone inside the home between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM on July 8, 2024, the presumed time of the birth and death of the children. Further evidence, according to the prosecution, emerged from biological tests, including those performed on organic material seized at the Messina Polyclinic where the girl had undergone curettage surgery. These tests confirmed that the two newborns were the suspect's children, born alive, and that their deaths were caused by suffocation. From the accounts of family members, believed to be unaware of what happened in the home, it also emerged that the girl had been admitted to the Grande Ospedale Metropolitano of Reggio Calabria shortly before the babies were found, due to severe bleeding.

The young woman had only complained of general physical discomfort, categorically denying having ever been pregnant.
