Milan, tensions at the march against the Remigration Summit
Smoke bombs thrown by protesters, police use tear gas and water cannonsClashes with the police at the march in Milan against the Remigration Summit, the gathering of the European far right that ended in Gallarate. Tension exploded at the height of via Carducci: the demonstrators in the front rows stopped and put on helmets, then began throwing smoke bombs, firecrackers and glass bottles.
Instead of continuing along Via Carducci, the procession diverted onto Via Leopardi and turned onto Via Boccaccio where there were contacts with the police who also used water cannons and tear gas.
The demonstration, promoted by about 70 groups including associations, left-wing parties and unions, opened with the musical group Modena City Ramblers with “Bella, Ciao” . At least 30,000 people gathered in Piazza San Babila, the organizers announced, from the stage of the demonstration, where politicians, representatives of associations and unions took turns reading some articles of the Constitution.
"It is serious that there are also those in the Italian government who support gatherings of this type," said the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein. "We are happy with this beautiful participation in Milan, much higher than those that closed in Gallarate - she added -, to reiterate discriminatory concepts that we do not accept, that the Constitution of this country does not accept ."
Silvia Sardone, Matteo Salvini's new deputy in the League, spoke out about the tensions: " The left is reaching new levels of embarrassment. In Milan, once again, social centers and opponents took to the streets not to protest, but to attack the police. An unworthy scene that shows, without a shadow of a doubt, how allergic the left is to democracy."
