«You took me for evil otherwise you wouldn't have taken me . With my mind I reconstructed everything as the speech was, I know that there was no traitor . The morning I was arrested the first thing you think is that someone has betrayed you. Jesus Christ was betrayed... and then the colonel told me "I assure you that no one betrayed you" and I didn't believe him . Then reasoning I said: it's true. I read the papers and I also made a logic."

This is what we read in a passage from the interrogation given by Matteo Messina Denaro to the Palermo prosecutors on 7 July in the L'Aquila prison, after his arrest the previous January.

Still speaking to the investigators, the boss, who died in September 2023 , specified: «You took me for illness or for a mistake on my part. Tell my sister (who was sick, ed.)? Why did I tell him? I didn't want to be found dead and no one in the family knew anything."

The boss is referring to the fact that his sister's note about Messina Denaro's illness, found in the armrest of a chair, was the beginning of the investigations that led to his arrest after years and years of being on the run.
