Maldives massacre: Emails between Montefalcone and the University of Genoa under scrutiny
The Flying Squad's investigations are continuing to shed light on the death of the teacher and the other four divers. The Genoa Flying Squad, delegated by the Rome Prosecutor's Office, continues its investigation into the deaths of Professor Monica Montefalcone and four other divers during a dive in the Maldives.
Investigators are combing through emails the professor exchanged with Distav, the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Life Sciences. Those university emails, investigators suspect, could contain details of Montefalcone's daily activities and any authorizations for various scientific activities.
In addition to the emails, the "mission document" containing the research addresses was also allegedly acquired. If the green light is obtained, it is still an investigative hypothesis, the deaths of the doctor and fellow Muriel Oddenino could be classified as a work-related accident. The University of Genoa, from day one, has always emphasized that "the scuba diving activity was in no way part of the activities envisaged by the scientific mission, but was carried out in a personal capacity."
The statements of Professor Elisabetta Rampone, director of the Department, who was interviewed by the Flying Squad, could clarify what the University authorized. In addition to her, investigators are currently interviewing the other 20 people who were aboard the Duke of York, the ship involved in the Maldives expedition. In the coming days, agents may acquire all the paper and electronic materials stored at Distav.
