A fatal illness, which struck him at sea, while he was kitesurfing, killed lieutenant colonel of the Guardia di Finanza, Roberto Russo, commander of the economic and financial police unit of the provincial command of Rimini. The 40-year-old soldier, originally from Acireale (Catania), died last night in hospital.

According to an initial reconstruction, on Saturday, around 1pm, Russo was kitesurfing when he was suddenly seen lying in the water.

He was found by a lifeguard, also a surfer, at beach no. 60 in Rimini.

The lieutenant colonel was taken to shore and the same lifeguard performed the first cardio-respiratory rescue maneuvers on him.

Then the ambulance arrived and he was urgently transported to hospital, but the doctors' attempts to save the soldier's life were unfortunately in vain.
