Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery and the procedure "was successfully completed within the expected time and manner."

The Vatican press office announced this at the end of the operation performed this afternoon at the Gemelli Hospital to remove a lung nodule. "The Holy Father," reads the brief statement, with "further information" to follow, "has returned to his room."

The surgery lasted a couple of hours, and was complex, but if there were no complications, recovery time was rapid. The patient was able to move, walk, and eat independently the following day, Edoardo Mercadante, director of the Thoracic Surgery Unit at the IRCCS IFO Regina Elena National Cancer Institute in Rome, explained to ANSA.

The operation involves the removal of the lung lobe where the nodule is located (lobectomy) and all the lymph nodes in the mediastinum, the anatomical space located in the central part of the chest, between the two lungs.
