“Nonna Peppina”, the old woman who became a symbol of the resistance of the earthquake victims, died a week after the day she turned 99.
Actually Giuseppa Fattori, her 99th birthday would have been on November 26th.
The old woman had refused to leave a wooden house built near her home in San Martino di Fiastra (Macerata), reduced to a pile of rubble by the earthquake that hit Central Italy in 2016. several parties in Parliament as well as by the daughters Agata and Gabriella.
The house, declared illegal, was remedied by a special law renamed "Salva Peppina".
The old woman was nominated Commander of the Republic last February by Sergio Matarella.
He had time to see the start of work on the reconstruction of his real home, in December 2020. "I hope to be able to go and live there for at least one day, after 4 very difficult years," he said.
Nonna Peppina died in that wooden house she never left. "She was very fragile", said the mayor of the town Sauro Scaficchia, recalling how the woman had become "a symbol for everyone." Her battle was over in Parliament, up to the famous law that had regularized the illegal house. Her case it had been the forerunner to other regulations in favor of the earthquake victims.
