The convictions in the Viareggio (Lucca) train station massacre of June 29, 2009, are final. The judges of the Fourth Criminal Section of the Supreme Court of Cassation ruled this by rejecting the appeals and upholding the five-year sentences for former CEO of FS and RFI Mauro Moretti and the other ten defendants. Moretti now faces prison time.

"I am outraged by this sentence because it is profoundly unjust," says Ambra Giovene, Mauro Moretti's lawyer. "It is unfair to the people affected by this outcome, for some of whom it means opening the doors of prison for a negligent crime, which is certainly a very serious matter: there were 32 deaths and hundreds of injuries. A crime for which Engineer Moretti is not guilty. I have to say this—though his lawyer won't say it—but the documents say so."

"It's profoundly unfair to open the prison doors for Moretti," he added. "It's deeply sad that in the end, those who will celebrate, as we all know, will be the victims' families, who have already organized a concert. It's sad for those who will attend the concert, it's sad for the victims' families who must bow, as we do, to this sentence, but there's nothing to celebrate, for us or for them."
