Filippo Turetta was stopped this morning in Germany. The young man's lawyer, Emanuele Compagno, told Ansa, having confirmed it and informed his parents. The young man was aboard his Fiat Grande Punto when he was intercepted.

The crime

An international arrest warrant had been issued against the young man for the accusation of the murder of his ex-girlfriend Giulia Cecchettin, missing for over a week from Vigonovo (Venice), whose body was found yesterday in a gully near the lake Barcis, in Friuli. According to the first autopsy tests, Giulia was already dead when she was thrown down the slope: the stab wounds she received to her head and neck were several and very deep, inflicted with great violence.

The young man had fled Italy on Sunday, perhaps immediately after the crime.

The blood money

In the hands of the Venice Carabinieri who were looking for him there was a video taken at a petrol station in Cortina. It dates back to Sunday morning: we see Filippo filling the tank. He pays in cash and then leaves. A few days later the owner of the plant opened the cash register and noticed that a 20 euro banknote had stains similar to blood. The man called the police and carabinieri of Belluno who acquired both the video surveillance images and the banknotes, now in the hands of the Venice investigators. The investigations will have to establish whether the blood on the money is Giulia's.

The searches were concentrated beyond the border. Now Philip's escape is over.

The procedures

Now we will have to wait for the technical times foreseen by the procedures - generally a few weeks - for extradition to Italy. Germany will have to make the final decision on the execution of the warrant within 60 days of the arrest. If Turetta agrees to the delivery, the decision is made within 10 days. The requested person, according to the rules, must be handed over as quickly as possible on a date agreed between the authorities in charge, at the latest within 10 days of the final decision relating to the execution of the European arrest warrant.

The young man is now served with an arrest warrant by the German authorities; it will then be brought before a judge in that country for the validation procedure. Turetta has the right to have a lawyer, an interpreter and free legal aid. Once the process in Germany is completed, it will be handed over to the Italian authorities, through Scip, the Service for International Police Cooperation, which operates at the Central Directorate of the Criminal Police. The agents will go to Germany to pick up the young man and take him to Italy.
