Explosion in a construction site of the Third Pass: a young worker dies, a colleague is injured

Tragedy at work in a construction site of the Third Pass railway line, between Piedmont and Liguria.

A worker died and a colleague was injured in an explosion that took place in Voltaggio, in the Alessandria area .

The victim is a 33-year-old Sicilian business traveler , the other worker, aged 54, was transported to the Novi Ligure hospital.

The cause of the explosion may have been a gas leak during an excavation activity : the 118 rescuers reported an explosion.

"We are going to the construction site to understand what happened and deepen it with medical facilities and the company", says Gaetano Nigro, Fillea CGIL contact officer for the Third Pass. «According to initial information, there is talk of a pocket of firedamp gas inside the rock. The blaze would have been triggered by a spark during the preparatory work in the tunnel ».

The 118 Central initially reported an explosion, it looks like a cylinder. " A comparison that could hold up, considering that the gas was trapped in the rock ," underlines Nigro.
