Appointment this morning at the Palazzo del Quirinale , in the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella , for the presentation of the candidates for the "David di Donatello" Awards for the year 2023 .

The Sardinian Salvatore Mereu is also in the race, competing for the award with the film "Bentu" in the best screenplay category.

It is the fourth nomination for the Italian cinema award for the director from Dorgali , winner in 2003 as best new director with "Ballo a tre passi". The other two nominations had arrived with "Sonetaula" in 2008 and with "Assandira" in 2021.

"Bentu", produced by the Nuoro company "Via Col Vento", was born as a short film for a course in directing and screenwriting for students of the University of Cagliari and tells the story of an elderly farmer from Sanluri who lived in the mid-1900s . The film probes the relationship between generations and nature with the elderly man preparing his land for the arrival of the wind, "bentu" in Sardinian, which allows the wheat to be freed from the straw.

Also representing Sardinia at the Quirinale this morning was the presenter Geppi Cucciari , who read out the nominations and interviewed the winner of the David for Lifetime Achievement, Marina Cicogna, and the winners of the 2023 special Davids, Isabella Rossellini and Enrico Vanzina.

The ceremony ended with the greeting of the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, and the speech of the President of the Republic.
